The final part of the stone walling installation is the slate window surround sets, which we fabricated back at our workshop.
Before fabrication we had to survey and create templates for each window surround set using 12mm ply.
We then carried out the final fabrication works on site, cutting each piece of slate to the correct length.
The installation can now be carried out.
We’ve used Brazilian slate on this project to match the patios and foot paths around the house. The Brazilian slate is 25mm thick and has a very slight riven on the surface.
External flexible adhesive and mechanical fixings are used to secure the slate window surround sets into position.
You can see that the slate sills project past the slate reveals, catching all water run off and dispersing it.
Slate cills always need to be installed at an angle away from the house, these slate cills had a 35 degree angle.
Bringing regularity to an otherwise randomly constructed wall works really well.
The Cornish walling stone was from a quarry up near Delabole – Trecarne Quarry
